There Are No Cut Corners Here
It seems today everything is mass produced and 'Made in China.' People are searching for what is real and truly authentic. We handcraft each barn quilt one-at-a-time to create a one-of-a-kind design for you. Using quality materials and time, we hand draw each pattern and painstakingly paint each piece. Yes, it is old school and often tedious. We aim for clean, crisp lines and sharp edges. This allows the handcrafted authenticity of our barn quilts to shine through. From the brush strokes that become almost a part of the pattern to the date and signature on the back, you will have a real and authentic barn quilt to display on your homestead.
We start with high quality MDO (Medium Density Overlay) also known as sign board. (More information is available at www.roseburg.com/ProductGroup/duragard-mdo.) Each barn quilt is then primed and painted with quality exterior satin paint. A layout of the pattern of your choice is hand drawn on the finshed surface. Then it is painted with satin exterior paint. We do not use stencils or spray paint. If you choose a framed barn quilt, cedar is primed, painted and attached with stainless steel screws. The whole shebang is then finished with three coats of satin spar urethane for moisture and UV protection. If you opt for a frameless quilt, the edges are painted and urethaned in the same fashion as the front and back sides of the quilt. The final result is a durable piece of American art that you will enjoy for many moons to come.
We have barn quilts that have been in service for over 10 years with NO MAINTENANCE! We have many customers that come back to us for additional barn quilts for themselves and friends and family. We don't advertise and get the majority of our work by word of mouth and by the Graces of God. Every time we finish an order the Lord provides another customer for us to provide just what we need, but never more than we can handle.
What to look out for
You get what you pay for. Those are not just meaningless words. In the world of barn quilts, cheap imitations abound everywhere. They are easy to spot when you know what to look for.......
1. Cheap plywood. You'll see the tell tale wood grain texture that no amount of paint can disguise. Interior plywood or even exterior 'treated' plywood is not appropriate for an outdoor barn quilt. There are actually very few products that can withstand the rigors or outdoor exposure with no maintenance. We use the best outdoor materials money can buy.
2. Cheap paint. Some self-described "makers" use acrylic craft paint. It you're just looking for a fast fashion decor piece for inside your home, craft paint may be just fine. But that's not going to cut it if you want a custom barn quilt for your restored barn or brand new pole barn. We use a proven system that we have not changed for 10 years.
3. Sealer. It's an extra step that most barn quilts don't have. A high quality sealer is costly. Plus it takes time to apply and time to cure properly. We use a satin finish top of the line sealer. It doesn't yellow and provides proven protection from UV and moisture damage. We use a proven sealer system and installation methods that result in a long lasting product.
4. If a barn quilt producer says that their barn quilts require yearly maintenance they are not built correctly at all. They are a very cheap imitation of the real thing. Our barn quilts require NO MAINTENANCE! Just enjoy them.
